  • Hi!

Thank you Surendra and the team. Our recent trip to Nepal was very well organised by Firante Treks and Expeditions. The planning process was very efficient with good email communications and safe transfer of funds, and rapid confirmation that they had been received. The trek was for 18 days and well organised, and at all times we felt that our safety and comfort was paramount. The inevitable illnesses, cuts and blisters were dealt with very professionally. I would certainly recommend Firante Treks to anyone trekking in Nepal & Tibet.

  • Namaste Pradhu,
This is Helga from the Wolfgang-group. You are so nice! This is very kind of you. Well, the group really was happy. You and the cooking staff, service men and the boys have been wonderful ambassadors for Firante Treks: No moods, no bad temper, always helpful and watchful. You all made our trekking to Mt. Kailash a success. Surendra really should know what good crew he has provided. It is really true: This trekking was a memorable one! I am sure, no one of us will forget it.

Tibet

China's Autonomous Region Tibet is often called the “roof of the world”. Situated on a high desert plateau with an average elevation of 4,000 m, it is rich of cultural heritage. Located between China in the north, Nepal and India in the south and Xingxang in the west, it covers a land area of 1.22 million square kilometers and a population of approximately 2.3 million.

In Central Tibet you can visit Tibet's beautiful, ancient cities as Lhasa, Shigatse (the seat of the Panchen Lama), Gyantse and Tsedang. You will have magnificent views of the turquoise Yamdrok Lake from Khamba la pass, standing at an altitude of 4794 meters above sea level. Tibet will give you an awe-inspiring scenery of the ever impressive Mt. Everest and you can see how nomads steer their herds of yaks through snow-topped mountain passes. This unique land is now easily accessible from Kathmandu (Nepal) and various parts of China.

In west Tibet you can find the sacred Mt. Kailash, a holy mountain and important pilgrimage for both Hindu and Buddhist religions. This mountain is also the source of the four great rivers of this region; The Indus, Brahmaputra (Tsangpo), Karnali (Ganges) and Sutlej. These rivers are all fed by the water of the nearby sacred Lake Manasarovar.

Time to visit

The best time to visit Tibet is May till October, when the temperatures are higher. The winter months are usually very cold. Although the weather of the first and last months of this season is generally stable and clear, with cool temperatures during the days and nights below freezing. The least travelers visit Tibet during this period. July and August are usually warmer, but this is when the monsoon pushes beyond the Himalaya, swelling the creeks and coating the valleys with greenery and wildflowers.

Temperature and weather

Most of the trips are crossing the dry Tibetan Plateau which lies in the rain shadow of the Himalayas and does not receive much annual rain. We schedule our departures to miss the monsoon season in Nepal and we should almost be guaranteed clear skies. The weather on the Tibetan Plateau during the day will be surprisingly mild and warm, around 20 degrees, while nights will be clear and cool with temperatures well down below zero. Although our trips are timed coincide the periods when the weather is generally good, be warned that weather in mountainous areas is notoriously difficult to predict, and short-lived storms can occur at any time of the year.

Entry to Tibet

Kathmandu to Lhasa by flight: Air China is the only Airline operating flights between Kathmandu and Lhasa 3 days a week (Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday). The flights normally operate from April till the end of October and sometimes till November, depending on the weather conditions. This trans-Himalayan flight takes one hour to reach Lhasa and offers spectacular views on the huge mountain range and the southern Tibetan plateau below.

Overland connection from Kathmandu:There are five major road routes to Lhasa, but foreigners are only supposed to use the Nepal Friendship Highway and the Qinghai route (via Golmud). The journey from Kathmandu should be seen as an adventure and not just as sightseeing. You must make sure to drink plenty of fluids, this will help you to acclimatize. The choice of hotels en route (except in Lhasa, Shigatse and Gyantse) is extremely limited. From Kathmandu it takes 5 days to reach Lhasa. This route opens round the year for travelers.

Tibet from Mainland China:Lhasa is also connected with Beijing, Xian, Chengdu and Shanghai by air. There are every day Flights operating from Lhasa to these cities. Gongar is the only Airport in (Tibet) Lhasa. Travelers who are interested visiting Tibet via mainland China can commence their journey from one of these cities.
